Burundi: order date, inspection and registration

Check the future order-date rule
For the 2026/27 budget year, Article 221 requires imported jeep- and car-type vehicles ordered from 1 January 2027 to be electric or hybrid. The provision also covers vehicles bought by state services. It does not establish approval for a particular vehicle.
Plan for inspections after registration
For Burundi-registered vehicles, the order covers mechanical and pollution checks. Vehicles used for private business and leisure (affaires et promenade) are inspected annually; vehicles carrying passengers for payment are inspected every six months.
Meet inspection certificate conditions
Defective vehicles must be repaired and restored to good condition before OTRACO can issue a technical inspection certificate. The 2026/27 Finance Law also requires proof of civil-liability insurance before the certificate is issued.

Present an insurance certificate covering civil liability when obtaining the technical inspection certificate.
Registration authorisation file
For the attestation d'autorisation d'immatriculation, OBR directs applicants to the tax verification officers of its Vehicle Registration Service. Confirm the complete current supporting-document list with that service.

- The current age limit, steering-side rules and their exceptions have not been confirmed for imported used passenger cars.
- Import-stage emissions or conformity requirements, the full customs and registration checklist, and private versus commercial importer conditions remain unconfirmed.
- Vehicle classification, evidence of the order date and transitional treatment under Article 221 need confirmation with the competent authority before purchase or shipment.
- Vehicle-specific taxes, relief eligibility, official service charges, freight and delivery times are not quoted.
